Buick Yip - Mui Fa Jong(aka Muy Fai Jong, Plum Flower Posts)

Yim Wing Chun was well known as a master of the plum flower posts. To this day certain lineages still practice chi sao and other drills on these posts. The typically range from 2 inches in diameter to 7 inches or so (the better you get the smaller the post). The minimum configuration is 5 posts evenly spaced in a square with 1 central post. The posts should be spaced according to your height (for proper footwork). The general spacing is that each post's center is 2 feet from each neighboring post's center.

You will receive 5 posts. You can secure them to a board if you like, but they are meant to be separate so they are easily portable.

Post Measurements:

- Each of the 5 posts is approx. 7 inches in diameter (18 cm) and 6 inches high (15 cm).
Wood:

These posts are made from Camphor Wood. You might have heard of Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) in relation to ointments. Camphor wood is famous for clearing stuff noses, healing muscle spasms, repelling insects and keeping silver from tarnishing.

Hundreds of years ago, the unsanctioned cutting of a camphor tree in China or Formosa (Taiwan) was punishable by death because it was reserved for sacred ceremonial items, such as the Chinese mu-yu drum used in temples. Later it eventually flourished in foreign trade when ship captains and other seafarers sought it for their sea chests to ward off moths.

It was soon discovered that camphor's scent also opened up stuffy noses. Word of camphor wood's reputedly powerful medicinal properties spread to Europe and America, and many people considered it a cure-all. The medicinal compound called camphor, refined from the tree bark, eventually found its way into ointments for the relief of muscle spasms and nasal congestion.

Today, stiff competition still erupts between lumbar buyers and drug manufacturers when camphor wood comes up for sale. While you won't find camphor wood at lumberyards, it occasionally finds its way to dealers of exotic woods.

The camphor tree, an evergreen, grows slowly and can end up over 100 feet tall. It takes 50 years or more before one becomes large enough to distill camphor from its bark, and even longer to be made into a wooden dummy.

Disclaimers and Warranty Info:

These solid wood posts should be kept in the normal humidity range, which is 50-60%. After extensive testing we see that most dummies hold up well at 45% humidity, but anything under that (esp 25-30% humidity) can cause the posts to start to crack. Anything over 69% and you might develop mold in your house, so that should be avoided as well. This range is considered ideal for humans as well as dummies. If you are in an arid environment you should consider getting a humidifier. Please get a good hygrometer (they are cheap) to monitor the humidity in the area the dummy will be kept. Prevention of cracks is your responsibility. The posts can be acclimatized to the arid environments, but it must be done over the course of 6 months, so you would have to slowly drop the humidity in the room over that time until you got down to 30% or lower.
