| Buick Yip - Wide Blade Chopper Butterfly Knives
We asked Buick to make us this design based off a client's request. And, I must say I was quite impressed with these swords, they are my favorites to date. Most Wing Chun lineages don't stab as much as hack and chop into the opponent. That is what these swords were made to do. The handles are slightly curved so you hold the sword correctly, and the quillion is large enough that most people can flip the swords, which most lineages do as well. Plus, as always, they are very durable.
As with all the handmade swords, Buick has a blacksmith who lives in the mountains of China produce these blades. They are hefty and very sturdy and can take years of constant beatings. I was quite impressed when I picked them up. They are made from Iron Sand steel. Here is what he said about them:
"The swords are blacksmithed from steel dust with back and forth hammer striking and melting, treated with the exact process of traditional Chinese weapons (this is true) and it is a vanishing business, the only handcraft blacksmiths will be gone in a few years with no successors. A significant difference is that the blades are tapered on the back line (please refer to my photos which show very clearly) gradually narrow towards the tip, most offered on the market were cut out from commercial steel plates that the weight is not concentrated on the back of the blade. That makes significant difference."
The pictures will give you the best idea of them. They are made for training, rather than looks.
As of 2/23/07 we have the following quantities left, and no more will be made! 3x 11", 5x13.5", 5x15".
Blade Width Approx: 3.5"
Blade Leangth Approx: 11.5", 13.5" or 15".
Handle Length Approx: 5"
The 11" blades cannot be flipped, due to a smaller quillion in the back. The other blades can be flipped.
