Everything Wing Chun Custom Shop - Design Your Own Baat Jaam Dao
While we will accept projects for a single personalized pair of swords,
the EWC Custom Shop service is focused on school and lineage runs of 15 pair minimum with hidden or full tang designs at affordable prices. If that interests you then read on...
Tired of getting poorly made BJD that are dangerous to use (loose blades, handles falling apart, or etc?) Tired of having to "make due" with a butterfly sword that is not to the correct specs for your lineage? We are too!
We made our own line of BJD to bring high quality workmanship to the market for the first time. While doing our research we cataloged over 30 unique styles of BJD used in the Yip Man lineage. This is not surprising since BJD are supposed to be made to fit each individual's size and fighting style. If one of our outstanding EWC brand offerings does not meet your precise needs,
please consider our Custom Shop service to turn your vision into an affordable reality.
As stated above, while we can do single pairs, that is not the best use of this service. But for those that are interested, a single pair of semi-custom BJD made at our overseas forge associate based on one of our existing D Guards can cost as little as $750 (plus shipping and customs). By way of comparison, a totally custom pair of full tang knives made in the U.S. by an experienced top notch stock removal blade smith with a perfect mirror finish will generally cost $3,600 minimum (plus shipping and customs). You will be getting great quality for the price... But if you want the BEST and can pay for it we'd do the design then recommend one of our partners that will hand-make you a pair here in the US. However, If you need a small run for your school - that is where we bring you the best value.
What the Service Covers:
There is a non-refundable design fee of $400 which covers our intake survey, review, further discussion and creation of a rough drawing for your approval. This is a one-time only fee that does not need to be repeated on additional orders of the same knives.
Once approved, full payment of the balance (see "final costs", below) is required prior to scheduling and construction which generally takes from three to nine months depending on the complexity of the job and projects already in the que.
This service is the first step in getting custom BJD made at our forge, it does not include a license to re-use our existing intellectual property or the new design at another forge - or schematics sufficient for that purpose. The last thing we want is to be mistakenly associated with low quality or dangerous work done at another forge or to create a knock-off competitor.
The EWC Custom Shop provides you with five things you may not realize are important:
- EWC's expertise designing and sourcing high quality BJD for a variety of styles, including affordable consultation by the prestigious US-based Modell Design LLC (they designed the famous integral knives and our flagship line);
- Access to our experienced forge associate. The forge is a family business with expertise making the highest quality BJD we have ever offered for sale, including the long-gone integral knives, full tang, hidden tang and special projects BJD.
- The ability to do very small runs (a lot of Chinese/Asian sword factories will demand minimum orders of hundreds of pairs);
- Your choice of materials;
- The ability to do business at overseas forge prices without the risk of losing your money to an unqualified or unscrupulous actor;
- Use of our proven EWC brand D-Guards and blade styles to help keep costs down (and we have put a lot of budget into research and development over EWC's six year history).
Final Costs:
There are a lot of options (and most require research) to find the exact price you will pay at time of construction. Final cost for production of the swords (which is in addition to the $400 design fee) will depend on factors such as construction method, steel choice, handle complexity and materials, blade size, difficulty of grinds, whether we need to develop a custom D-Guard, whether a custom laser etched school logo is desired, the size of the initial order, any sheath or carry case system, and whether a prototyping process is required. We will discuss this with you during the process. You can either let your design dictate the price, or try to conform the design to your price requirements.
To give you a rough idea of what you might pay over the design fee - we can usually do a single semi-custom pair for as little as $350, and semi-custom production swords (qty 15+) for as little as $80-100 per pair (plus including shipping, customs) using good grade materials and quality construction. We'll work with you to keep the costs down and make sure you are getting an excellent deal. Your dollars will go a long way.
Because we take your project so seriously, this program is very time intensive on our part
so as a matter of respect between martial artists, please do not contact us about it unless you are serious.
