Description

Samuel Kwok - Chi Sao Seminar

Develop your chi sao to be like a "wet cloth" that drapes over your opponent smothering him with your attacks.

This is a great seminar DVD that covers many aspects of Chi Sao.  You'll see Sifu Kwok work with over 15 different students showing a variety of techniques and pointing out weaknesses and common problems.  This DVD covers, but is not limited to the following:
  • Fook Sao - correct and incorrect pressure and how to follow-up when you feel incorrect pressure.  Knowing the correct way prevents you from opening yourself up to attack.
  • Bong Sao - forward pressure vs sideways pressure.  Knowing how to use it right allows you to overcome strength.
  • Taun Sao - Why it's important and the proper position (including the weaknesses of improper positions).
  • Running Hand when taun is pressed down.
  • Trapping and striking when the bong is pressed down.
  • About "listening to the energy", to understand what to do - what information your opponent is feeding to your hands.
  • How hard to push in chi sao (forward pressure) and weaknesses of too much pressure.
  • A discussion of the taun and palm, including how to find the opening and execute the palm.
  • A focus on how to deal with people pushing too hard with the taun sao.
  • How to counter someone pushing their whole body into you trying to run you over during chi sao.
  • A secret is "no _____ on the _____."
  • "No matter how much energy he uses on me, it's going back to him."
  • "What we want to lean is to redirect all the energy people want to use".
  • How to counter and follow-up a tense taun sao.
  • Demonstrations of bong showing the correct way and many incorrect ways.
  • Analogy of the 1000 lb cart and the wheel to bong sao.
  • Removing the threat to your centerline away from your centerline.
  • Proper Guan Sao execution.
  • Techniques to use against a tense person.
  • What to do when you are unsure.
  • Learn a variety of techniques by watching Sifu Kwok work with his students.
  • Answers if you should push or not push in double chi sao.
  • When to use and not to use energy.
  • How to establish good distance/position.
  • and more.

A Crouching Tiger June 6, 2006
Reviewer: Dr. Barry. R. Hutchinson Four Seasons Wing Chun from UK

I saw Master Kwok on the VCD of the first Wing Chun World Conference. I have to say, he is the daddy of chi sau. I know that Wong Shun Lung was called Gong Sau (King of Hands) but Master Kwok surely can't be far behind.

In this presentation of his chi sau seminar, he rolls hands with members of a Wing Chun school. All sizes, all levels and he eloquently shows you how to Listen with your hands and interpret the level of the person in front of you.

He also goes on to demonstrate how to deal with hard energy and soft energy alike.

His manner is gentle and non threatening, but watch closely, there are brief moments when you can see he is definitely a crouching tiger.

Master Kwok demonstrates and shows how to structure your Bong, Tan, Fook properly. For you forward energy practitioners out there, he tells why it doesn't work!

You will need to have a certain level of wing chun experience to enjoy this presentation, nothing for the beginner here. However, if you are really into having a good resource for wing chun, this is a must. Sam Kwok is definitely one of the top masters out there!

Finally, the only problem with this DVD is that it ends too soon.

Dr. Barry. R. Hutchinson Four Seasons Wing Chun.
