Comments: This pair is made of San Mai consisting of an AISI 1085 High Carbon Steel core and outside layers of AISI 4340 Low Carbon steel. 4340 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel known for toughness with good fatigue resistance. San Mai is made by forge welding layers of steel, being careful not to introduce gaps between the layers. The grain pattern has been brought out by bathing the blade in acid. You can feel, as well as see, the different layers at their border so if you want a smooth mirror finish blade, this is not it. This San Mai was made specifically for these knives and has been tempered to be weapons-grade. Because the blades are carbon steel, however, they need to be cleaned and re-oiled after every use.
